Wow – that’s beautiful – It would make a magnificent evening accessory. Are there more details on making this?
Cheers
Ainslie.
Oh – gorgeousness. I love that♥
Hi, I am part of group 9 and received my pattern on Monday and am excited to sew this weekend – pattern looks straight forward and fitting will not be an issue. I do not have suitable fabric in my stash so I plan to sew this out of muslin and will leave comments as I sew. Can’t wait to get home form work tomorrow and start in. The pattern is for a 36 bust; I will sew the wrap as is.
So I cut this out and put the pattern over my shoulders and the wrap lays nicely around the neck (flat) . I pinned the ties on where they belong and the left one hangs below my knees and the right one about 4″ above my knees.
I am 5’7″ with a 34″ bust and the pattern was written for a 36″ bust. Obviously fit is not a huge issue on a wrap but I would not change anything on this pattern for fit. This is a simple design for which I would buy fabric and use given the occasionminus the long ties.
This is where I’ve decided to blog for this project. I set up another blog but decided this would be easier to find for others to comment on.
Glad you had a chance to try this pattern out. I am much taller and larger (smile) so for my 5’10″ frame the ties hang from high thigh to just at or a bit below the knee. I have considered the length of the wrap minus the ties and I may increase it by a couple of inches–but I am still in design mode of fabrics etc. If I bead it, as I think I will I won’t want to make it bigger!
Please see my other post–your comments would be most welcome.
Carol (Group 9)
I have a dear friend that worked in New York City for years doing historically accurate pieces for theatre and museums. After seeing the wrap pattern, she proceeded to tell me how it would have been made. The base would have been silk overlaid with net, but all the pattern work would have been beaded. The bottom was bead mesh with handmade silk tassels. It was a bit overwhelming to think about the beauty of a piece like that (understatement!!!) However, since talking with her, I dug out some books and started to read. Time is limited but what a beautiful heirloom could be created from this project. I am contemplating using some warm beige silk dupioni with brown net and metallic brown and copper beads. I am not sure yet—I love the detail but….I have done a little beading—less than 100 hours, which makes me very novice.
I have some questions for all of you
1. Should I just bead to the net? That would be most delicate, but for some of the heavier sections it might be just too heavy? Thoughts?
2. I plan to use these beads (Miyuki #458), #15 rocaille http://www.firemountaingems.com/details.asp?PN=H202429SB What thread would you recommend? My friend said Nymo. What say you?
3. With the size beads I am using what size thread would I use.
4. I emailed The 1752 Company who has the best selection of English net that I found, but who usually only deal in wholesale. Do any of you have sources for this fine net?
5. Silk tassels-what do you use? I have looked at silk floss, but it seems like chainette would be better??? What would be historically correct? What can I find that will be silk and …silk crochet thread??
6. What source(s) would you use for the silk tassel materials?
Thanks for your input–I certainly have many questions.
Carol – don’t know why my comment to you didn’t reply to this one. See below. =)
I am learning so much from you and some day may try to take on a beaded garment project. I have dabbled in jewelry making and love t o dream of the results of garment beading but don’t think I have the patience at this time. Please keep blogging about the materials and process.
I can answer the beading questions. size 15 is very tiny, you might want to use size 11 beads instead, still small beads but not microscopic. nymo is what I used to use when I lived NOB, but there are more choices now, for example Fireline. You can even get nymo in colors now! If you use the size 15s then you need the finest needles(I think size 15) and thread (maybe 00). I would probably couch down a row of 3 to five beads at a time. If you use the size 11s then you can use the fireline which won’t fray. here is a link to a pdf on bead embroidery http://timeless-creations.ca/Historical-Beadwork-Part-2.pdf there is some good information there.
Also beaded stuff is heavy, amazingly so. You might even consider using some bugle beads, sort them out first and discard any jagged ones.
I’ve made some pretty nice beaded tassels too.Good luck with your project. I bet it will be gorgeous.
regards,
Theresa
Thank you for the information-the pdf was very good and I will refer to it often as I work through my project. I had not considered the weight-athough the dupioni is woven strongly, reinforcement may be necessary. My next step as I wait for materials is to draft a pattern for my beadwork. As I get going I will post my progress. I know it will be a time consuming project, but well worth it .
Carol (Group 9)
When I have done beading for film and stage, I have made the decision of how to secure the beads based on the weight of the beads with the drape of the fabric. If your beads are not too heavy for the netting you are using, you could bead directly on the net before placing on the under fabric. Then if you want to stabilize the beaded net a little, you can attach at a few points through all layers – thus, tacking your beadwork to the under-fabric where it most needs extra support and to keep it from shifting too much.
As for thread, use whatever you like handsewing with best and run it through beeswax or some other thread conditioner & protectant (I have a little cube of “Thread Heaven” that I like). Remember to knot between beads at whatever interval seems best to you (that way if you break a thread later you won’t lose all the beads on that strand).
You would probably love my textbook from costume history – here’s the link on amazon. Lots of text and a few sketches for examples – but mostly written details. I usually start this this book when I begin research for a project.
Good luck with your wrap – I’m sure it will be beautiful!
So glad you replied. I was hoping you would!! I will check out the costume history textbook. I have Thread Heaven too, but have used it mainly on quilting projects. You did not comment on sources for netting–do you have any?
Not sure I really have any good sources for netting unless you are local to the Dallas, TX area. I did notice they have silk net on sale on fabric.com right now – but it only comes in white, so you’d have to dye it the color you wanted. If you don’t mind nylon (not completely period authentic) you can probably find that in whatever color you need.
If you ever want to contact me directly, there is a form and email address listed here on my blog. =)

I tried to reply back to your email but it kept bouncing back – it says your inbox isn’t “responding”. Try emailing me directly (without using the form on my blog) and I’ll see if I can reply back to that. Maybe your inbox is full?
I just don’t like cluttering comments with long conversations (makes for a messy blog later) and I don’t always notice if there is something new added. Glad I have been helpful! I love talking sewing. =)
If you ever have any questions about something specific, let me know and I’ll try to find an answer for you – I’ve got a large network of costumers in my cell phone who have been costuming professionally longer than I have, and I have a decent personal library in my living room. Sometimes, research is just easier with real books than trying to hunt for the right term to ask the internet a question!
I have a book that helps with netting. Where do you want me to send it?
Joy
Thanks for the resource!
Hi Group 9, I saw Carol’s e-mail and question about what we may be considering for the wrap. I found a beautiful almost midnight blue velvet that draped very nicely and a fancy floral and scroll work print with silver thread that complemented the blue nicely. I know it is not exactly they type of fabric the pattern called for, but the colors were beautiful and the print had an old fashioned feel to it. I have the wrap basted together and plan on finishing it with 4 inch fringe.
It sounds lovely. The variety of fabrics, techniques and looks are what makes this so much fun. I can’t wait to see pictures of it. Did you encounter any issues with pattern or fabric/materials? Happy sewing.
Hi, sewing went fine but adding the fringe in a straight line is taking longer than I thought. It looks quite lovely so far. I was afraid the points might not lay nicely but the weight of the fringe helps. How is your wrap coming along?
Glad you are making great progress. Today, I have just received the beads and thread, but I have yet to get the net. I will need to dye it before I start. It will take some time to finish this as the beads are size15. But I am excited to do this. My friend is going to help me with techniques that will make the mesh work out well. She has suggested a cork board platform to pin my design on for the mesh trim (lower edges where the fringe will attach). I can stick pins in and then add my beads. I hope to get started this weekend with some beading if my net arrives. I will stitch to the net and then add it to the silk dupioni. I know this will take some time, but I think it will be a great learning experience. What did you choose for your fringe? I still need to order some silk floss. But I think I need about 200 yards and it is hard to find it in quantity. Any ideas?
I found spools of silk thread here at this link. I prefer using handsewing with silamide for fancy projects (of course that’s just what I’m used to having access to) and you can find that at this link.
Thank you. I am actually looking for a floss weight to make tassels. Have you used any Vardini silk floss? I think I need about 200 yards, so the yardage woud be helpful.
Hi, I found a four inch fringe in a local fabric store. I ended up dyeing twice to try to take the brightness off the blue so it wouldn’t be such a harsh contrast with the other fabrics. It’s not a perfect match, but it will do. Hope to get my photo of it up this weekend. I can’t wait to see your beading, sounds like a great idea and experience!
I’ve never needed any in tassel cord in silk. Maybe this thread at FireMountainGems would be close to what you need – comes in 92 yard spools. They have lots of other threads and ribbon cording in silk as well. Other than that, I have no other sources in my favorites. *shrug* Hope this helps! =)
Hi, I have a photo of the finished wrap on my wordpress blog. This is my first time trying to upload a photo so I hope this works!

wow really pretty, hope mine will turn out this nice!!!!!!!!
All these sound lovely! Although I have completed my wrap, made up with machine made trimand inexpensive materials which I had on hand, reading about all these gorgeous hand beaded confections makes me want to make another and do it justice with some beautiful handwork and fine fabrics. Whether or not I get that done, I will enjoy following your projects here. My wrap is posted on my blog, http://mmemermet.blogspot.com/
The wrap is beautiful! I really like the trim around the edges.
Your wrap is beautiful. It turned out so very nice. It would fit the period, I think. Do you have plans to wear it?
Thanks for sharing.
Finally got home from the Socorro reinactment, we had a wonderful time. I did some fabric shopping in Albuquerque and I picked up a gold and black silk fabric, hope to overlay it with some black lace I have on hand. Look forward to starting today. I am glad to hear no-one had to alter their pattern, But I will prabably have to shorten the ties as I am only 5ft tall. If it hangs to the knees on some of you taller ladies it will brobably hit my ankles. Thanks for the warning. I have strings of black seed beads ( inherited from my Grandmother = real old now like antique. Been wondering when I could use them, this may be just the place. Have to see what they look like when I get that far along.
Happy beading to all you ambitious ladies.
Ellen
I got my pattern today and can’t wait to get started. I was just thinking about doing the beading pattern in silk embroidery instead? Would that be period correct? Please chime in and tell me your thoughts on this. Any help is appreciated.
I’ve received my pattern, downloaded it to my printer, taped the printed sheets of paper together and have cut out the pattern pieces. You can read about the beginning of my 1912 Sewing Adventure here –
http://vintagegams.blogspot.com/2012/03/1912-sewing-project-ive-received-my.html
I Made my pattern to fit my larger than 36 ” bust. Would share with others how to increase the size without altering the great fit around the neckline. I can post pix and directions here if anyone is interested.
I am waiting for my black lace to arrive, I think this is truely lovely. would like to see other photos of completed project.
I would love it if you would post your alterations to the wrap. I love learning from others, and no doubt, you have some things to teach me. I will post a few starting pictures soon. I am beading the entire wrap on English net. I have just gotten my cork board so I can do my mesh at the bottom to attach the tassels to.
Hello, dear sister seamers, I’m sorry to have disappeared for a month, Family matters and my own ill health put a crimp in my sewing and internet time.
The finished projects are amazing and I appreciate the blogs on procedure. I’m hoping to get mine done this next week or ten days if everyone will just get out of my studio and out of my head and let me work.
For anyone interested my blog is here: http://briarrosefiberarts.wordpress.com
I received my wrap pattern a couple of weeks ago, and have been looking forward to putting it together. It was a good fit for me, as I am a little unsure about my capability to put too complicated of a pattern together, but I feel I will do ok with the decoration. I have had bronchitis the past couple of weeks, but I have done a test piece, and I think it will be a lovely wrap when I am done. I will try and post some pictures sometime soon.
