PatternMaker’s Basic Reader and Doll Clothes

This is an excerpt from the PatternMaker Knowledge Base that I wrote a few years ago.  It can be found in their Resources and Support>CAD tools>Printing section.

One of the questions we always get is, “Can PatternMaker make Doll Clothes, or Bear Clothes, or even clothes for Dogs?”  The answer is a definite yes!  With the editing versions of PatternMaker you can do this on screen.  But with PatternMaker’s Basic Reader, you can still get patterns that are close to the size you need.  Then just adjust your paper pattern a bit and you are ready to make clothes for that special friend!

The first step is to see what size the friend is.  Measure around the Chest,  Hip, Back Waist Length and Height.
Next compare them to the Pattern you have.  You are looking for the most similar measurements.  If the friend’s chest measures 33 cm (13 inches) and a the pattern is 66 cm (26 inches), these are fairly similar. (The friend is half the size of of the pattern.)
Run the macro and use Offset or Draw Seam Allowance to extend your seam allowance to 3cm (another 1.5cm) .
Set your print layout and don’t forget to move the Offset AND the pattern piece.  Then when you click Print Clip5 to bring up your Print Preview Window.  Look towards the right hand side of that Window to where it says Print Scale:.  PatternMaker can print out in any scale you would like.  We’ve used this before to print the Fabric Layout, but you can also scale the patterns to a smaller size.  50% & 25% are already there, but you can use the box marked Scale: and just fill in your own scale.  To get the scale, divide the friend size/child size.

You may need to adjust the pattern a bit on paper to make it fit; length for dolls, neckline and length for bears.  But you will have close patterns that only need a tiny bit of tweaking!
